Edward Gorey’s mordant masterpiece The Wuggly Ump charts the fate of three wholesome children whose happy days weaving chains of flowers are cut short. “Sing tirraloo, sing tirralay, The Wuggly Ump lives far away.” That is one of my favorite beginnings to an Edward Gorey book. From tohe lived in New York City and worked for the Art Department of Doubleday Anchor, illustrating book covers and in some cases adding illustrations to the text. The illustrations are simple, colorful, and resemble the happy drawings Mr.
The kids are eaten at the end. This is one of my favorites of Edward’s.

This book is printed in three colors like The Bug Bookbut the colors were added at the printing stage and not on the original artwork. This gives the book a paint by number feel that is appropriate to the story, with the colored areas being flat solid tones which infill elements of the drawings. A breezy sunshiny bit of sing-song morbidity.

I don’t really understand why a creature that likes to eat inanimate objects would suddenly have a craving for flesh of young humans edwarx w When I turned the first page of this little novel I thought ” Wow an Edward Gorey that’s not entirely disturbing”.

Goreyana: The Wuggly Ump
Really loved this one. This book was printed on very inexpensive acidic paper and is quite fragile now. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. We were all rolling with laughter at the end. What’s not to like? I let the kids read this one and they laughed and laughed at it.
Meanwhile a group of children are playing merrily in the fields, weaving daisy chains and generally enjoying life. Deward was actually a story in color.
