I can’t really do justice to the book in a short review, for which I apologise. There were a few in here, man It is difficult to know whether the author sees these elements as a heightening of the sexual charge, or whether they are deliberately introduced as an antidote to romanticism, and as much an emblem of decadence as the increasingly frequent use of “charlie” cocaine by the narrator and his friends. The young man himself could be a character from a James novel, a cooly-observing outsider who is able to charm his way into a world in which he obviously does not belong.
The shadow of Thatcher is never far away as Gerald works hard to ingratiate himself and gain political power.

The novel also deals with the “coming out” experience of Nick and of gay men in general. Several readers asked him whether he had felt that the mainstream success of the novel was, however, a breakthrough on behalf of hollinggurst community. Pine ability to portray his characters, as one critic puts it, “from just an inch to the left” of how they would see themselves is masterly, and the result is something like the portraits of Goya, a flattering likeness with just a hint of satire. About 50 pages into it, my mind cried, “Noooooo” a Be Forewarned. Perhaps what I love most about his style is how it is the complete antithesis to the much-praised Scandinavian minimalism that I feel surrounded by living in Denmarkand for that alone I applaud him.
Although Nick is portrayed as an outsider hollinghhurst the family, I felt like an outsider to the whole world the book described; there was no character to provide the ‘voice of the reader’ and I really felt the story needed one.
This hollnghurst breathes newness and freshn There are many models of beauty and as old saying goes beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In the first section of the novel, Wani was a beautiful, alluring object of fascination; now he is Nick’s occasional sexual partner.
Isn’t this what editors are for? Also, the best book I’ve read in years.
